Sotheby's Institute of Art is The Graduate School of Art and Its Markets. Evolving from a small connoisseurship program begun by Sotheby's Auction House in 1969, Sotheby's Institute is now the leader in art business education and object-based learning. The faculty represent the best of the art world, helping students master the unique forces at play at the intersection of art and commerce. With campuses in London, New York and Los Angeles, Sotheby’s Institute offers graduate level programs that are relevant to an art world that is constantly seeking individuals with depth of understanding, art historical scholarship and business acumen.
Besides Master's degrees Sotheby's Institute offers programs of study such as 15-week semester intensives, study abroad, summer study, online learning and executive education. Sotheby's Institute is open to all with a passion for art that seek to go beyond the classroom and experience the art world first hand.
Originally conceived as a training program for connoisseurship by Sotheby’s Auction House in 1969, Sotheby’s Institute has pioneered the education of arts professionals. The Institute has more than 6,000 alumni worldwide who hold top positions in all facets of the international art world.
In each of the Institute’s Master’s programs, students explore art from a range of social, cultural, economic, and object-based perspectives, while gaining a deep understanding of how international art markets operate. All MA programs include travel to major fairs, exhibitions, museums and collections, where students can engage with artworks firsthand.
Found in the heart of Bloomsbury, the London campus is at the center of one of the world’s most important art capitals. The Institute is situated in Bedford Square, built between 1775 and 1783, one of the best preserved Georgian squares in London with a private central garden. The London Institute is part of the ‘larger academy’ of Bedford Square, located next door to premier educational institutions such as the Architectural Association and the Paul Mellon Centre, with the University of London and the British Museum in the neighboring square. Sotheby’s auction house, the National Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery and the Royal Academy Of Arts are a few minutes’ walk away. The Institute is also close to Mayfair, the traditional center of the London art market, where many dealers and galleries are located.

Sotheby’s auction house was founded in the city in 1744 and its London offices are now part of a global network encompassing Europe, Asia and America.
